Travel Channel To Film ‘The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides’  In New Zealand.

International Travel Documentary Series will screen on SKY in May 2011.

Travel Channel is filming a new series of their successful and long-running series ‘The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides’ in New Zealand currently.

Hosted by award-winning broadcaster Henry Cole, the show will embark on a road trip taking on the best of the North and South Islands, kicking off in Auckland, today.

It was my pleasure to have a coffee with Henry this morning in Downtown Auckland and I can certainly vouch that he is just as engaging and pleasant to talk to in person as he appears on TV.

If you spot him on a new Harley ’48, which he rates as ‘great fun’, with his production crew on the road, say G’day - he’d welcome some local knowledge from KR readers, you might even end up on the tele!

‘The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides’ follows Henry on his quest to find some of the best places in the world to be on two wheels, taking in spectacular scenery and meeting many of life’s most colourful characters.

Previous series have seen him ride the west coast of America from San Francisco to Los Angeles, the American deserts, Death Valley and the Mojave, not to mention probably the world’s most iconic and well known highway, Route 66.

Cole also filmed in Germany, the home of Europe’s most enthusiastic bikers, taking what is known as the Castle Route from Frankfurt to Rottenburg on the rural roads of Germany.

In the Isle of Man, Cole contemplated if The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Ride could be only 37 miles long.  It may not be a gruelling adventure but the Isle of Man is home to the most famous road race in the world; Isle of Man TT.

How will New Zealand stack up against these epic road trips?  Travelling from one end of the country to the other, Henry said he is ‘looking forward to experiencing the winding roads of the North Island, passing through iconic New Zealand towns and absorbing some of the most breathtaking mountains, lakes and scenery the country has to offer.’

On the South Island he is 'looking forward to what is commonly regarded as one of the best motorcycling roads in the world, the west coast ride from Westport to Hokitika.  And experiencing the unspoilt landscapes and forests on the ride from Haast Pass to central Otago and on to Wanaka'.

Filming will began in Auckland today, and will culminate in Christchurch on February 28th.
